Look At This Chart… SEO Is Dying! But What Is Replacing It?

Google Trends is a great little tool for researching certain niches.

Today I had a little look to see if I could come up with some interesting stories relating to Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

What I found really interesting is that interest in SEO has really nosedived:

In the chart above interest in SEO is represented by the blue line.

So what’s the red line?

The red line shows the soaring interest in…

Digital Marketing

So what’s the difference between SEO and Digital Marketing?

For me, SEO is about getting traffic from search engines – Google in particular.

Digital Marketing is a much wider topic and reflects the fact that there are numerous other channels from where to get traffic.

This is certainly reflected in Google Trends.

So what’s big in digital marketing right now?

According to Google Trends, these topics are trending:

  • Social Media in general
  • YouTube marketing
  • Local search
  • LinkedIn marketing
  • WordPress
  • How to find digital marketing jobs

How big is YouTube? And how big will it get? I don’t know about you guys, but since my TV remote broke I now watch way more YouTube than I do conventional TV. TV is just too broad niche for me these days. There’s no TV channel about ASMR, or MBTI, or Grand Theft Auto or Pokemon. But on YouTube there are thousands of people posting high quality content on these topics every single day!

I guess the take home message is that on the Niche Laboratory blog I need to be covering a lot broader digital marketing topics, and not exclusively focus on SEO.

So what digital marketing techniques are you looking at right now? And what techniques are working for you?

I think that the change in taste has a lot to do with the challenges small businesses have experienced with SEO. Many of them simply failed to see the return on investment they had hoped for. A focus on SEO can leave the main goal neglected, which is often to get more paying customers. After all, getting a web page to rank higher in Google doesn’t guarantee a decent conversion rate – for that you need great design, an in-demand offer, and excellent copywriting to communicate that offer.

Under the umbrella that is digital marketing, more effort goes into figuring out how to engage website visitors so that they convert. This allows businesses to see greater returns from the traffic they get, even if that volume is lower than if they had secured a page one ranking. So now, it’s all about digital marketing, with SEO as a much smaller part of a now larger and more effective strategy.

Hi Brett!!! To answer your question, “So what digital marketing techniques are you looking at right now? And what techniques are working for you?” For me, I am just starting my eCommerce journey and I appreciate all the information. Better late than never to find you and I am thankful. Since its a one man show, trying to do everything is driving me nuts, so I want to concentrate on creating YouTube videos and starting podcast. Audio is gaining traction and for me, driving in LA traffic, I am able to learn and get insights from the movers and shakers for FREE!!! I’ve receive a Master Degree from the countless hours in traffic. The change of mindset of hating traffic to enjoying it has changed my life forever because I am learning from millionaires and the leaders in my industry. How many people can say that? Podcasts are on the rise because most people claim they do not have time but I can carve at least 2-3 hours everyday that can used more wisely but To Each His Own.
